An internal career development tool built with existing platforms—designed to empower employees to grow from within

The Challenge

A global tech organization wanted to promote more internal mobility, especially within IT. While open roles existed, employees weren’t always aware of the opportunities or how to prepare for them. There was no system in place for self-assessment or role exploration—just a list of job descriptions buried in SharePoint.

Function + Form was brought in to create an internal solution that would help employees explore growth paths using only the tools already available.

What Function + Form Did

Function + Form designed and developed a lightweight career exploration app called Career Path Stories, using Microsoft Power Apps. It was crafted to be interactive, informative, and scalable—while requiring no new software or additional budget.

Our Contributions:

  • Conducted discovery interviews to uncover employee and team needs

  • Identified untapped Power Apps functionality and pitched it as the platform of choice

  • Built a fully customized app to browse roles, self-assess skills, and watch role “talking head” videos

  • Connected job descriptions to career “trees” and growth pathways

  • Created all launch materials, including internal emails, a team training session, branded swag, and a SharePoint-accessible landing page

  • Designed the experience to be easily expanded by other departments

Why It Worked

Function + Form brought together internal storytelling, instructional UX, and technical scrappiness to create a high-impact tool from existing resources.

By designing the system to feel approachable and empowering, employees didn’t just consume information—they started owning their career development.
